In 1954, René Monnier and his wife, Lucette, run a family grocery store in Roubaix. The city is on the Belgian border where the Marshall Plan brings many consumer products.

In France, we lack everything and Roubaisiens fraudulent coffee “Grootmoeder” (which means “grandmother” in Flemish). A need that does not escape the husband Monnier. They decide to start their coffee. For the nod, they call it “Grandmother”.
